Compost
What a wonderful idea. Making mulch from garden trash and boosting your garden.
Here are a few easy steps.
1. perfect disguise for your compost.
2. nice size cannister . ( Im talking about the red one, but if you buy the bigger blue one then yeah for you that works too.)
3. I often bury some canisters in the garden. WHAT? I puncture holes in the sides, or if I have a drill handy) tons and tons of holes. You will want to allow worms to work there way into it . I just dig a hole and sink the canister in the ground. When I get not so perfect veggies , ants got them, they fell unripened, you know the drill here. put it in the canister and toss a few leaves and such into the mix. Then for a topper I just put a stepping stone or something over it so I remember where it is. Sometimes I will remove the bottom of the can too. I just like that I can give directly back to the earth and not work the process so much, but allow mother nature to just take its course.
Here are a few easy steps.
- Find a bin. ANY bin. It needs a top. I use totes from stores like the family dollar, target, walmart. 5 gallon is nice for my little area. I also use. Folgers plastic coffee cans (I know, I know but my reasoning will amaze you and I will be forgiven). These I use in my kitchen and a special place in the garden. more on that later. I
- What goes in it? To assist the process you are going to put in BROWN material. this is the paper layer, shredded paper. dried leaves, cardboard, straw) then you will layer it with GREEN materials fruit and vegetable scraps. If you cut them up into smaller pieces the decomposing process will be greatly sped up.
- What NOT to use. foods that have been cooked, greasy foods, meat, or dairy foods.
- Keep it moist. Add water. I use a spray bottle to just spritz it and keep it damp. This is not meant to be a swimming pool for garden trash.
- Put the lid on it and repeat the layers as necessary. Your tub will begin decomposing and when it becomes unrecognizable and just a clumps of black muck I put it in my garden beds. Let those plants sing.
